Holotype Lichenostigma saxicola

Holotype: Lichenostigma saxicola K. Knudsen & Kocourk.
 

Description: Vegetative hyphae rare, root-like, golden brown to dark brown, single cell wide, cells 3–5 x 2–5 µm, in width sometimes thin, or thick with cells equal in width and length, rarely branching, emerging from bottom of ascomata penetrating lichens or among rock crystals, never more than one observed per ascomata. Rare production of stolons, single strands of hyphae light golden brown to hyaline, superficial on rock substrate, 0.5–1 µm wide, septa infrequent or absent with ascoma forming on the tip, sometimes forming a short progression of ascomata, each arising from a new stolon. Ascomata scattered, not connected by superficial hyphae, superficial on granite or on the apothecia and thalli of saxicolous lichens, often sterile, convex to globose, 50–110 µm wide, 20–90 µm tall, outer wall of cells pseudoparenchymatous, black to dark brown, I-. Inner ascomatal cells globose to irregular, brown, but somewhat lighter than cells in wall of ascomata, mostly 4–6 µm in diameter, with thick outer wall to 1 µm, with darker granulated concentrations of pigment. Centrum I–, KI–. Asci 8-spored, 9–17 x 7– 20 µm, subglobose, 1–4 per ascoma , KI+ bluish around apex of ocular chamber. Ascospores hyaline at first, turning golden, then darker cacao brown, ellipsoid with rounded apices, slightly constricted at septum, sometimes upper cell slightly larger than the lower cell, 10.0–10.77–11.5(–12.0) x 5.0–5.53–6.0 µm (n=20), wall up to 1 µm thick, halonate when young, the halo sometimes persisting, with over-mature ascospores becoming granular verrucose. Microconidia not observed. Possible macroconidia formed without stalk on upper surface of sterile ascomata, of several cells, globose, 10 x 10 µm.

 

Type: USA: California: San Diego County, Henderson Canyon, Anza Borrego Desert State Park, north-facing slope, 33° 18’ 35” N 116° 25’ 21” W, 427 m, on granite and on apothecia of Polysporina simplex, March 15, 2008, Knudsen 9242 with Tom Chester & Wayne P. Armstrong (Holotype: UCR; isotype: PRM 859188).
